Yesterday
and today. Country and city. Cement and trees. Slow and fast.
The
veil of evening drops. The ticking of the grandfather clock competes
with the crackle of the fire in the hearth whilst the whistle of the
steam flowing out of the teapot invites one for a cup of tea. A
rocking chair is placed carefully on a colourful woven rug. Its
wooden legs protrude upward with paint scaling off to reveal its
first coat of white under red. People hustling with expressionless
faces in a hurry to…. somewhere. Shops are crammed and overflowing
with goods, trying to urge passerbys to come purchase something they
(don’t) need. Does the queue of lights end where the echo of
clamour and commotion ends? Does time ever stand still besides in the
grave?
My
collection ponders how long will civilization last if we continue the
way we are now. I am inspired by Finland in the 1940’s when times
were poor and the materials used in footwear ‘grew in their
backyard’. We should learn from mistakes made in the past and stop
to think about the mistakes we are making now.
Can we link together the good from yesterday and the good from today to build a better tomorrow?
